Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) Faculty of Education dominated the graduation ceremony yesterday producing 1,113 graduates, the highest among the fields.

Meanwhile, the Faculty of Medicine registered the fewest graduates with only 32 students completing their studies.

The Permanent Secretary for Higher Education Dr Beatrice Inyangala, who graced the 21st graduation ceremony addressed the challenges facing the university funding model, urging collaboration among stakeholders to address it.

“There have been concerns and we are listening. That’s why His Excellency, President Dr. William Ruto, established a national committee to address these grievances and refine the funding model.” The PS affirmed.

Dr Inyangala expressed that they need to find alternative ways to fund institutions to ensure the delivery of quality education.

Vice Chancellor Prof Solomon Shibairo reiterated the lower number of graduates compared to previous years attributing it to high academic standards and technical challenges that have been addressed.

The VC advised students to remain focused on their education adding that measures have been set in place to prevent missing marks in exams.

During the event, Kakamega County Governor, Fernandes Barasa, echoed the sentiments of the national government to implement the new funding model. Governor Barasa said stakeholders in the education sector are still concerned about the new funding model.

He said this graduation is coming at a time when the country is facing tremendous challenges in the education sector.

“This is a legitimate question that policymakers and implementors have to respond to, I’m aware that there are students even here in MMUST who face the threat of missing exams because they have not received their funding.” Barasa decried.

He lauded the Chief Guest Dr Beatrice Inyangala who has been very passionate about knowing that the space she has provided will enable the university students to acquire higher education without the challenges of paying school fees.
