Equity Bank has strengthened the Wings to Fly programme that offers internships to students who get Grade A- and above in KCSE before they join university.

The bank’s Associate Director for Youth and Women Banking Dr Silpah Owich said they will undergo internship for six months and be paid to motivate them.

She said the bank, with its flagship scholarship programme for orphaned and bright learners from poor families, said they will also be assisted to join universities around the globe to pursue education.

The director, who represented the bank’s Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr James Mwangi was speaking at Kisii School yesterday during the 15th anniversary of Wings to Fly and Elimu scholarships programmes.

She said 1700 students drawn from Kisii, Nyamira, Narok, Bomet, Homabay and Migori counties under the scholarships were mentored on leadership, education and empowerment during the three day programme.

“The congress had 24,000 students who are to join another cohort of 60,000 who had benefitted from the Wings to Fly scholarship,” Owich said.

Accompanied by Kisii County Director of Education (CDE) Philip Chirchir, Kitutu Central Sub-County Deputy County Commissioner Juma Walela, Kisii branch bank manager Robinson Mirieri and host Chief Principal Fred Mogaka, she urged the students to work hard and embrace discipline.

The director challenged the students to continue learning, seeking mentors, setting goals and using their skills and knowledge to give back to the community through volunteer work to benefit residents.

Walela, who represented the County Commissioner Joseph Kibet, challenged the students to take advantage of the scholarships to improve their lives and those of their families.

He implored the students to shun drug abuse and immoral activities, which will disorient their education and ruin their lives.
