Ensure safety of learners during demonstrations, protestors told

Migori County’s Ministry of Education Director Jacob Onyiego has called on protestors to go easy on students traveling to school amid the Azimio one Kenya coalition anti government demonstrations on Monday.
Onyiego noted that the demonstrations which began on Monday in Migori posed risks on transport to school going kids both in primary and secondary schools in the region.
He has since called on area leaders to intervene to ensure the safety of learners is maintained saying students are innocent and need not to be harmed in the process of demonstrations.
“Leaders in the area should be at the forefront in ensuring no learner and school infrastructures are destroyed in the process of demonstrations scheduled for Monday. I plead with protestors to avoid affecting the education sector in whatever way as this will have direct impact on our innocent learners,” he said.
Migori County residents took to the streets to effect call by Azimio one Kenya coalition principals on demonstrations against the Kenya kwanza government during a public barazas held at Migori posta grounds on Friday last week ahead of it’s 20th March 2023 mega protests.
His sentiments comes at a time schools have closed for half- term break and are expected to resume next week beginning Wednesday.
However most schools were forced to close early following the demonstrations which were witnessed on Monday in the county which affected learners transportation where private primary school parents were forced to look for alternative means of transport for their children who were left stranded in their respective schools.
Migori branch Kenya union of post primary education teachers chairman Henry Otunga has also echoed the directors sentiments noting that the future of this nation is in the learners and that demonstrations should be carried out without interference with learners and other people’s properties.
Otunga wants demonstrations strongly staged at the nations capital city Nairobi saying protects done there will have more effect on president William Rutos’ government fast than those done back in the villages.
“Holding protests in the villages will only affect our people as it’s effect shall be less felt by the national government therefore this should be done at the nations capital so that the message can be fast felt by government.” Said Otunga.
He noted that life has become unbearable especially for most parents who currently are unable to remit school fees in time this affecting the running of schools especially on projects which really on school fees paid by parents.
The demonstrations have been called for Monday 20th by H.E Raila Odinga citing 15 reasons why kenyans need to join them in the demonstrations against the Kenya kwanza government.
