Employ elaborate measures to curb cheating in exams, govt told

Few weeks before national examinations begin, education stakeholders in the South Rift have called for elaborate measures by KNEC to curb exam malpractice.

Led by Ann Soi and Betty Ng’etich, the concerned citizens want the measures to include control of phone usage, eradication of cartels, and direct supply of exam papers to sub-counties.

Speaking in Bomet town, they hit out at the government for relaxing the measures put in place by former Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang’i.

“During Matiang’i’s time, cheating had greatly been minimized. However, Kenya Kwanza has relaxed the measures and cheating has resurfaced,” Soi said, asking the Ministry of Education to come clear on exam preparations as credibility is key for the nation’s growth.

Nancy Rotich, a teacher and examiner, attributed exam malpractice to poor and delayed payment of examiners and security personnel, which has remained at Ksh1,650 over the years.

Rotich noted that many examiners are yet to receive their last year’s dues, stating that such delays have also demoralized teachers, whom she described as dedicated to their work.

“How do you expect teachers to be happy manning and marking exams when they have not been paid? As we speak, we have reports that some examiners are yet to be paid their last year’s dues. To address cheating and other forms of exam malpractices, the government should increase and make payments for examiners on time,” said Rotich.
