High school students envision to pursue traditional courses such as medicine, engineering, architecture, law, teaching and journalism.

Yet it is wise to consider emerging trends and technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), internet of things (IoT), augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), robotics process automation (RPA), data science and analytics, cyber security and block chain.

Actually, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are revolutionizing this wide old world. AI and ML encompass development of algorithms, working on natural language processing and building intelligence systems. Career opportunities include being an AI engineer, AI ethicist, data scientist and ML specialist.

Internet of things (IoT) connects devices by enhancing data sharing across networks. Social sites such as Facebook, WhatsApp and X have an impressive impact on how people in business handle network, marketing and sales. Job opportunities in IoT include: working as an IoT architect, IoT consultant and IoT developer.

Augmented reality (AR) uses real world setting while virtual reality (VR) is virtual. It is possible to access AR using smartphones whereas it is easier to access VR using headset devices. AR and VR have exciting prospects in the future of gaming, marketing, e-commerce and education. People venturing into this field can be AR/VR developers, experience designer, content creators, graphic designers, software maintainers, project managers and software engineers.

Robotics process automation (RPA) relies on software robots or artificial intelligence (AI) agents. Job openings in this sphere include: automation specialist, RPA and robotics engineer. Furthermore, data science delves deep into usage of data to build models that can predict future outcomes. Data analysts study past data in order to make decisions.

With technological advancement, professionals who can analyse data are in high demand. Experts in this sphere work with statistical models, data visualisation tools and predictive analysis. Career prospects include: data scientist, data analyst, business intelligence analyst, et cetera.

Moreover, cyber security is the practice of defending computers, servers, mobile devices, electronic systems and networks. The work revolves around safeguarding networks and systems. Experts in this sophisticated sphere implement security measures to protect cyber invasions. People who pursue this career path become ethical hackers, cyber security analysts and security consultants. Open University of Kenya (OUK) is offering degree programmes in cyber security alongside data science, digital forensics and education technology.

Finally, blockchain is a type of shared database that differs from a typical database in the way it stores information. Ideally, blockchains store data in blocks linked together via cryptography. Blockchain stashes different types of information, but the most common use of transactions is in ledgers.

Therefore, blockchain is a public digital ledger that records transactions across copious computers without alteration of all subsequent blocks. Work in this world involves developing blockchain applications, enhancement of security and implementing distributed ledger systems. Blockchain technology is applicable in finance, supply chain management and healthcare. Professionals in this area become blockchain consultants and blockchain architects.
