Embrace sports as employment alternative, students urged

Some of the students under the scholarship programme celebrate completion of their studies.

Students in higher institutions of learning across the country have been urged to embrace sports as a profession and an alternative income-generating activity that will enhance their financial stability and consequent self-reliance.

Wycliffe Sirengo, the Head of Sports at Zetech University, called on youngsters to view the current sports industry as a business venture full of opportunities.

He noted that participating in ball games and athletics not only keeps the player fit but also opens up new income avenues.

Speaking during the varsity’s celebrations to mark completion of studies for sponsored students under its sports programme, Sirengo also called on institutions of higher learning to nurture and support talents among students.

Sirengo said that the university has been nurturing young talents by committing Ksh10 million for fully paid scholarships to fund top talents identified through scouting in sports tournaments across the country.

Zetech University Head of Sports, Wycliffe Sirengo addressing the press.

“The beneficiaries have been part of the University’s sports teams including Zetech Sparks (basketball), Zetech Oaks (rugby) and Zetech Titans (football). Our aim is to promote sporting activities and nurture students’ talents, and this initiative seeks to motivate sportsmen and women that sports can be an active source of income,” he said.

He however noted that the kitty is inadequate as tens of talented students continue to express interest for the sponsorships.

The sports Head, at the same time, noted that Zetech is developing modern sports facilities at its expansive Technology Park in Mang’u campus, Kiambu county.

“These facilities will not only benefit our students but will also be accessible to members of the community,” he said.
