Students in Bungoma County especially in Public Boarding Secondary Schools have been called upon to uphold discipline both at home and in school so as to avert burning of school properties such as Dormitories and Administration Blocks.
Addressing students and parents at St Stephen’s Sikusi Boys High School in Kabuchai Constituency during an Open Education day, the Bungoma chapter KUPPET Chairman David Barasa noted that most learning institutions are affected adversely by the fire incidents some of which are caused by indiscipline cases amongst students and yet there are various channels of airing out their grievances like the use of Suggestion Boxes to the Management.
According to Mr. Barasa, there is a need for coordinated efforts amongst all stakeholders to alleviate the situation in the country.
“ There is no need for you students to burn down school property all in the name of a reduction in the ratio of food and want for entertainment.
It is better you persevere now for a better future other than you enjoy now with short-term demands and then suffer for the rest of your life, said Mr. Barasa .”
On his part, the Sub-County Director f Education Mr . Kennedy Onduru said that parents need o take an active role in their children’s education by paying school fees on time and avoiding depending only on local leaders’ assistance through County Ward Based Bursaries and National Government Constituencies Development Fund NG-CDF.
Mr. Onduru stated that the Ministry of Education has a capitation for every student to cater for tuition fees alone but parents need to chip in by paying for lunch and other meals at school.
“I hope Sikusi Boys high school will never be in the bad history of school properties damages by students, now that we have a new Chief principal Mr. Francis Juma who has assured me of his commitment to restructuring this school to greater potential as it is already being witnessed in a few months he has been around.
I have witnessed about three principals leaving this school due to unrest and other external pressures, said Mr Onduru. ”
Currently, the school has about 267 students whereby 67 are in the boarding section as many students transferred to other nearby schools due to what was termed as a series of disrupted learning due o unrest leading to the burning of the school properties affecting its performance during KCSE Exams.
This comes at a time when various schools in Bungoma County like Namwela Boys high school, Bungoma Boys High School, Kapsokwony Boys, and Maliki Friends School in Tongaren Constituency have been affected by fire incidents and rampages leading to n-estimated losses.
