Education stakeholders have been asked to attend community engagements related to implementing the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). The engagements, which kicks off on Monday, will take place across 47 counties and will be open to all.

Rift Valley Regional Director of Education Rosemary Mwambui assured that the views expressed during the dialogues would be considered.

Speaking at Chesinende Girls High School in Kipkelion East, Mwambui noted that focus will be directed to Grade 9 guidelines to safeguard learners’ pathways.

“From Monday, we shall have community engagements across the 47 counties. As citizens of this country, kindly attend those forums so that the issues guideline in Grade 9 can be discussed and you are getting enlightened so that you do not mess up our children in the career pathways,” she noted.

She directed JSS teachers who went through a one-week training on virtual labs during midterm break to put into practice what they got.

“For the schools that do not have physical labs, we have been having virtual labs, and the training took place for one week last week. When people went for midterm, the teachers in the JSS Category were taken in for one week to be trained and conduct all their lab tests and experiments in the class using laptops. So let’s work hand in hand and ensure the training done for one week will not be in vain,” she said.

Mwambui also urged parents to collaborate with teachers to ensure all grade 9 candidates are registered for the Kenya Junior Secondary Assessment (KJSEA), saying the registration has kicked off and the portal is open.

“The KJSEA registration has kicked off, and the portal for KNEC is open. Parents work in hand with teachers and head teachers in those schools so we do not leave our students out. Let them all be registered,” added Mwambui.

Area MP Joseph Cherorot, for his part, decried the high number of schools without substantive principals, urging the Teachers Service Commission to urgently address the problem.

Cherorot further promised that all form two and three students in day schools in the area will get bursaries, adding that the area has reported a rise in the number of students.

“In those schools, we decided that I pay all school fees for all form four students, and I am grateful that these students have worked hard and the population of students is also growing in our schools. This time around, all those who have applied for bursaries, those in day schools, we have allocated them money, form three and below, and those in boarding, we shall carry out vetting,” added Cherorot.
