The Ministry of Education (MoE) has been awarded the lion’s share of the just presented Budget for the fiscal year 2023/24.
The Treasury Cabinet Secretary (CS) Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u presented a Ksh3.68 trillion Budget at the National Assembly on June 15, marking an increase from Ksh3.3 trillion in the fiscal year 2022/23.
The Ministry received Ksh630 billion, equivalent to 27.4 per cent of the Budget with Ksh323.8 billion being allocated to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
The Treasury also allocated funds to hire 20,000 teachers and more Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) trainers, as well as to the operations and hiring of additional lecturers and staff to 21 Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) campuses.
The allocation of capitation funds to Junior Secondary Schools (JSSs) has also been increased to Ksh25.5 billion up from Ksh15 billion.
At the same time, the Higher Education Loans Board’s (HELB) allocation has doubled from Ksh15 billion to Ksh30 billion throwing weight behind the new funding model for institutions of higher learning.
The budget also allocated funds to double the number of interns employed by the Public Service Commission (PSC) from 4,000 to 8,000 with each earning a monthly stipend of Ksh25, 000.
Commendably, Ksh5 billion was allocated to the School Feeding Programme.
