Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Ogamba has come under fire for directing JSS interns to reapply for permanent and pensionable employment.
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Narok Branch Secretary Charles Ng’eno termed the directive punitive and ill-informed.
Addressing the press in Mulot, Ng’eno noted that the interns have been patient hence should not be subjected to other processes.
“The interns have been patient and have also sacrificed a lot. It is therefore wrong for Ogamba to tell them to reapply for employment,” he said.
According to him, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has the records of all interns, whom he says have done a commendable job for two years now.

He noted that the Ksh17,000 salary paid to the teachers is insufficient, basing on the sacrifices they have offered for the country.
“Ksh17,000 monthly salary is insufficient. Teachers do a good work and should be well remunerated,” he observed, observing that the directive is aimed at opening doors for bribery, a scheme he says the union will not be party to.
“The government has data for all teachers. Directing teachers to reapply for employment is aimed at opening doors for corruption and as a union we can’t allow this,” added Ng’eno.
The union further told TSC to stand firm, further assuring that it will use all avenues to ensure all interns are employed on permanent and pensionable terms come January next year.
