Kilifi county has set aside Ksh538 million to implement development projects in Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) centres and Vocational Training Centres (VTCs).
The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education and ICT, Felkin Kaingu Ndena, emphasized that ECDE education plays a vital role in laying a strong foundation for children.
He was speaking to Education News in his office in Kilifi town where he disclosed that the county has 812 ECDE centres and an enrolment of 58,870 children.
Kaingu said that the county had permanently employed 1,300 out of 1,700 teachers while the rest have been employed by Boards of Management (BoMs), adding that plans were underway to employ an additional 1,200 teachers in the next three years.
“The county government will construct 174 more additional classrooms in the county to enable a conducive learning environment,” he said.
In addition, he said that the county has also set aside Ksh100 million to provide porridge for the children.

Kaingu pointed out that two VTCs are currently under construction – in Rabai and Magarini sub-counties – to add to the current 42 centers which have 120 tutors and 7,500 students.
”The county government will employ 300 more instructors to cope with the ever-increasing number of students,” he said.
He called on parents to enroll Form 4 leavers into VTCs to acquire technical skills that will enhance their employability.
