A family in Kenyenya sub-county, Kisii is demanding justice for their Grade 5 son who was severely beaten by a neighbour over the alleged theft of a mobile phone.

According to residents of Igembe village, the Igembe Primary School pupil underwent the unfortunate incident after the neighbor, a shopkeeper, found his mobile phone missing from his shop and suspected the boy because he was playing with his friends around the area.

He reportedly accosted the boy identified as Abel Ondara, put him in a sack, tied him against a tree and beat him thoroughly as he sought a confession.

“When he poured paraffin on the sack with the boy inside threatening to lynch him, we intervened and rescued the boy,” said Gladys Nyanchama, an eye witness.

The boy’s father quickly arrived at the scene and rushed him to Magena Health Centre where he was found with several body injuries including his private parts.

“He has a sprain on the shoulder and swells on the private parts but we are still conducting more examinations, we shall be able to give a comprehensive report later,” Daniel, a medical officer at the facility said.

Ondara’s parents denied any wayward behaviour from their child that warranted the assault by the neighbour.

They decried no action being taken despite reporting the matter to area Chief Margaret Nyangwono.

They appealed to Kenyenya Sub County Director of Education (SCDE) Gladys Otieno and area Officer Commanding Police Department (OCPD) to intervene on the matter.

OCPD Zeb Igombi noted that he had not received any report on the assault but promised to investigate the matter and apprehend the suspect.
