The Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) has confirmed Dr Alice Wairimu Kande as its Director General after a long stint in the acting role.
This was announced by KNQA chairperson Stanley Kiptis through a press statement today April 22, 2024.
“Following deliberations and careful consideration, the council appoints Dr Alice Wairimu Kande as the Director General/Chief Executive Officer for a five-year term,” reads the statement.
This comes after the advertisement of the position on November 28, 2023 which received a total of 36 applicants, from whom 12 were shortlisted and interviewed on February 27 – 28, 2024.
Dr Kande, who has been in an acting capacity since December 7, 2022 following the exit of Dr Juma Mukhwana, now serves as the Principal Secretary (OS) in the State Department for Industry and also Deputy Director in charge of Planning, Research, Outreach and Policy at KNQA.
She holds a doctorate degree in Business Administration (Strategic Management) from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, and a Master’s in Business Administration and Bachelor of Education from Kenyatta University.
She is also a member of the Kenya Institute of Management and Academy of International Business-SSA Chapter.
Before joining the KNQA in 2021, Dr Kande was a Senior Researcher at the Commission for University Education (CUE), had previously taught at Riara University’s School of Business and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
Kiptis said Dr Kande has been instrumental in the development of various national policies at the Authority, among them the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy that was launched in March this year by the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Other policies coordinated by Dr Kande are development of Kenya Credit Accumulation and Transfer System (KCATS) and Registration and Accreditation Policy Frameworks.
“We have confidence in her leadership and hope she will steer the organization well. She has delivered for the period she served as the acting director general,” Kiptis said.
The chairperson congratulated Dr Kande, thanked all the candidates, stakeholders and Kenyans for participating in the recruitment and selection process.
