Days after the Government released Ksh3.3 billion through the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) for first and second-year university students, learners have been urged to make prudent use of the funds.
Educationists and stakeholders in the education sector maintain that the loans should not be squandered but utilized correctly for the student’s welfare and upkeep.
Led by Professor Owen Ngumi, the Dean of the School of Education, Arts, and Social Sciences at Zetech University, the stakeholders warned students not to gamble their funds, especially in the wake of the craze of betting among youngsters in the country.
They spoke at the University’s Thika Road campus in Ruiru, Kiambu County, on Friday February 7 during a public lecture by Dr Joseph Mwai, a Doctor of Metaphysical Solipsism, and a roundtable discussion organized by the institution in conjunction with the Philosophical Association of Kenya.
Prof Ngumi also added that students should not use the money to indulge themselves in vices like drugs and alcoholism, noting that this will jeopardize their studies and eventually put them in financial distress.

“We have held talks with our students and advised them to ensure that they prudently utilize the money they have received from HELB. Let them stay away from unhealthy expenditures like gambling, alcoholism among others,” Prof Ngumi said.
His sentiments were echoed by Dr Joyce Ngugi, a Philosopher and educationist who rallied students to utilize their time wisely while in higher learning institutions. She noted that focusing on studies will help shape the students’ careers and future.
“The students have very little study time and need to be careful and put it to appropriate use, divert from misusing their time and resources, and focus on building up on their career journey for their future,” Dr Ngugi said.
Dr Ngugi, a former Kiambu Deputy Governor and a member of the Philosophical Association of Kenya also called on students to embrace critical thinking in their daily activities as well as explore new philosophical teachings so as to broaden their opportunities. This will empower you to make informed decisions and navigate the complexities of the world.
