DCI deploys forensic experts to Endarasha to aid probe

The Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has deployed forensic teams and experts from the Homicide Directorate to aid in investigations into the fire incident at Hillside Endarasha Academy that occurred on Thursday last week.

According to a press release from DCI dated September 11, the teams are currently examining the scene to unveil the probable cause of the fire.

“The investigators are working closely with the Central Region Disaster Management Committee, fire safety experts, and officials from the County Government of Nyeri, the Ministry of Education, Health, Ministry of Interior and National Administration, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), the Red Cross, and other stakeholders to investigate any acts of omission or commission that may have led to this tragedy,” the statement read.

Mugambi noted that the institution had 330 boarders, including 166 girls and 164 boys. On the night of the fire, 156 boys were in the dormitory.

Two of the five boys admitted to hospital succumbed to their injuries, while the remains of 19 boys were recovered from the dormitory.

Further, he revealed that DNA samples from victims’ families have been collected for identification.

Autopsies are scheduled to begin today. The results will also form part of the basis of the probe.

It has been verified that all 166 girls are safe with their parents. Similarly, 140 boys’ safety with their parents has been verified.
