Dawn fire guts down dorm at a school in Machakos barely 2 weeks after unrest

A dormitory was razed down by fire at Muvuti Boys this morning, the second time in three months and barely two weeks after some students were sent home for staging protests.

In a shocking early morning incident, a dormitory housing 165 Form Two students at Muvuti Secondary School in Machakos County was ravaged by fire around 5 a.m today.

According to Muvuti Chief Benjamin Ngomoli, the fire spread rapidly through the building, but fortunately, no student was harmed as all were safely evacuated before the flames intensified.

Machakos County fire fighters quickly responded and contained the fire from spreading further, but not before the fire swept through the dorm, destroying property of unknown value.

The incident happens at a time of heightened concern as just two weeks prior, a group of students from the same school staged a protest that turned violent, prompting the school administration to temporarily send several of them home.

Local police in Machakos have launched an official investigation, working closely with the school administration to gather details that could reveal the origin of the blaze.

“Our priority is to understand what caused this fire, and if there’s any connection to the recent unrest,” said Ngomoli.

Preliminary reports suggest that the fire may have started in one section of the dorm before quickly spreading, but investigators are considering all possibilities.

In July this year, another dormitory in the school was also set ablaze.
