Current political temperatures not good for Education Sector

The current political climate is not favorable for the education sector. Ongoing political activities in the country are beginning to disrupt learning in various regions. Stakeholders are increasingly concerned about how the education calendar will proceed without political interference this year and next year.

In a recent statement to Education News from Narok, education advocates are blaming politicians for the rising political tensions. Rodney Ntieri, a key figure in rural education empowerment, expressed concern, saying, “It is only two years since the last elections, but the political atmosphere is already charged. This does not bode well for the education of our children.”

Parents with children studying away from home are also expressing anxiety over the growing political tensions. Education News has learned that some parents are considering transferring their children to schools closer to home, fearing that their children’s safety and the continuity of their education may be compromised if the political disputes persist.

Education, being a powerful tool for national integration, has historically been impacted by regional politics. Currently, the political divisions taking shape in the country are negatively affecting teachers, learners, and education officials, who often bear the brunt of the consequences of political unrest.

Stakeholders are urging national bodies responsible for cohesion and security to take decisive action as mandated by the constitution. They call for the prosecution of politicians who spread hatred among Kenyans. Any atmosphere of fear caused by political animosity, they assert, will undermine the significant progress made in the education sector.
