CUE publishes a list of 79 universities authorised to operate in Kenya

In the Tuesday notice, The Commission for University Education (CUE)  also listed at least 15 institutions across various parts of the country that are offering degree programs without the grant of authority to operate.

The commission indicated that any institution operating as a university or degree-awarding institution that does not appear on the Commission’s list of approved institutions is illegal, and their degrees will not be recognized in Kenya.

It listed 35 public universities that are authorized to operate in the country, including the University of Nairobi, Moi University, Kenyatta University, Egerton University, and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, as well as Maseno, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, and Dedan Kimathi University of Technology.

It also listed Chuka University, Technical University of Kenya, Technical University of Mombasa, Pwani University, Kisii University, University of Eldoret, Maasai Mara University, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, Laikipia University, South Eastern Kenya University, Meru University, and Multimedia University of Kenya.

Other universities include the University of Kabianga, Karatina University, Kibabii University, Rongo University, Taita Taveta University, Co-operative University of Kenya, Murang’a University of Technology, University of Embu, Machakos University, Kirinyaga University, Garissa University, Alupe University, Kaimosi Friends University, Tom Mboya University, and Tharaka Nithi University.

The commission also recognized 28 private chartered universities, including the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton; the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA); Daystar University; Scott Christian University; Strathmore University; United States International University; Africa Nazarene University; and Kenya Methodist University.

St. Paul’s University, Pan Africa Christian University, Kabarak University, Mount Kenya University, Africa International University, Kenya Highlands University, Great Lakes University of Kisumu, and KCA University are also listed.

CUE also listed Adventist University of Africa, KAG East University, Umma University, Presbyterian University of East Africa, Aga Khan University, Kiriri Women’s University of Science and Technology, The East African University, Zetech University, Lukenya University, Management University of Africa, Tangaza University, and Islamic University of Kenya.

In addition to the fully accredited universities, the commission acknowledged three specialized public universities: the National Defence University-Kenya, the Open University of Kenya, and the National Intelligence and Research University.

Five public university constituent colleges also made it to the list, including Turkana University College, Bomet University College, Koitaleel University College, Mama Ngina University College, and the Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.

Two accredited private university constituent colleges, namely Hekima University College and Marist International University College, were also included in the list.

The Commission also granted letters of interim authority to six institutions that are still in the process of obtaining full accreditation. They include GRETSA University, Riara University, Pioneer International University, International Leadership University, and AMREF International University.

The Commission for University Education was established to make better provisions for the advancement of quality university education in Kenya, which entails regulating and accrediting universities and university academic programs, among other functions.
