Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Ogamba has urged university student leaders across the country to halt their planned demos over the new higher education funding model.

The CS, in a press release, urged the students to call off the protests which were slated to begin today and give room for engagement with stakeholders, saying the ministry has already set up two committees to discuss the model.

“In order to allow room for this open consultative process, the university student leadership is requested to call off the demonstrations scheduled for September 9, 2024. This will afford the student community the chance to contribute effectively to issues pertaining to their higher education, while also progressing with their studies without disruption,” he said.

Ogamba said the committees aim to ensure efficiency and achieve meaningful student participation on how to better the funding model which has been greatly opposed by parents and students.

“The primary task of the Working Committees will be to review the status of implementation of the New Funding Model and make recommendations for improvement,” the CS added.

There has been student unrest in recent weeks regarding the new funding model as a majority have been saying it unfairly burdens students, especially those from vulnerable backgrounds.
