Female teachers from Nyamira County have called on the Education Cabinet Secretary to consider hiring teachers on a 50-50 basis between the female and their male counterparts during the upcoming recruitment.

They also want female teachers not to be posted far away from their families saying such posting has a far-reaching family disintegration effect.

“We appeal to the president through the CS for education Ezekiel Machogu to make it mandatory for female teachers not to be posted far away from their homes because this leads to the disintegration of families.”Said Janet Omwenga.

The female teachers who spoke at Gesima Ward, after completing a financial training course sponsored by Global Financial Solutions Agency outlined several challenges along their career path.

They lamented against gender discrimination exhibited by their employer during promotions.

“We find our male counterparts being promoted even if they do not merit.”Said one of them.

They said that payment of huge loans borrowed was another bane in their lives.

They also named the delocalization of teachers as another factor that hindered them from clearing their loans after they were moved from their centers to far places.

The female teachers welcomed the government’s decision to revert to the old way of enrolling Teachers in the defunct P1 colleges without considering the cluster subjects.

They said the move to allow those with C plain to join Diploma Colleges will open wider opportunities for teachers to join courses of their own choice.
