Taita Taveta County Commissioner, Josephine Onunga, has urged the residents to ensure heightened vigilance, parental responsibility and adherence to the law as the festive season begins.
Speaking during the 61st Jamhuri Day celebrations at Moi Stadium in Voi, Onunga expressed concern over the risks associated with the holiday period, particularly for families, urging parents to play a more active role in safeguarding their children and guiding them through this busy season.
“Taita Taveta is a popular holiday destination, which means increased activity and visitors during this time. Parents must remain cautious and lead by example to protect their families and uphold values,” she said.
The County Commissioner cautioned against excessive celebrations that could lead to neglect of parental duties, noting that teenagers are often vulnerable to risky behaviors during such times.
“Let us guide our children and ensure they follow the right path. Everyone in the community must respect the law and prioritize safety,” she emphasized.
Onunga also raised alarm over the rising cases of gender-based violence (GBV), child abuse and rape in the county. She criticized a culture of shielding perpetrators, which she said hampers the pursuit of justice for victims.
“Communities must stop protecting individuals who commit heinous crimes such as child abuse and gender-based violence. This culture of silence only promotes further harm,” she stated. She urged residents to report such cases and ensure perpetrators face the law, stressing the importance of accountability in building safer communities.
As the festive season unfolds, Onunga issued a strong warning to bar owners and liquor sellers, urging them to comply with regulations. She vowed to crack down on the sale of illicit brews and those operating outside licensed hours.
“If you are caught selling alcohol illegally or serving minors, your license will be revoked, and you will face the full force of the law,” she warned.
On health matters, Onunga highlighted the Social Health Authority (SHA) program, which has seen approximately 70,000 residents register for affordable healthcare services. However, she noted that more efforts are needed to reach the county’s entire population of 350,000.
“The SHA program is transformative, allowing low-income residents to access essential health services for as little as Ksh 300. It has already benefited many, including those requiring major surgeries,” she explained.

In addition, the Commissioner lauded the county’s economic potential, particularly in the mining sector, calling for unity and accountability among stakeholders. She noted that Taita Taveta has vast untapped resources and urged leaders and ranch owners to ensure transparency in mining operations.
“By promoting fairness and cooperation in the mining industry, we can ensure equitable benefits for all, including small-scale miners,” she said.
Onunga emphasized the need for peace and collaboration to create a conducive environment for investors and unlock the county’s full economic potential.
“Taita Taveta is poised to become a major investment hub. Let us work together to foster a peaceful, welcoming environment for economic growth,” she added urging the leaders to ensure that all stakeholders, including small-scale miners benefit from the resources.
She urged them to shun from any form of exploitation or secret deals with the cartels so that everyone can benefit.
