Children infested with jiggers in Kakamega receive treatment

Pupils infested with jiggers from various primary schools in remote areas of Kakamega County received free medical treatment.

Speaking during the National Jiggers Day, on March 3, 2024 County Public Health Officer Mbati Emicheche said they ferried quite a number of pupils infested with jiggers from various schools in the area for treatment at Rosterman near kakamega town.

The aim was to eradicate jigger menace affecting children who cannot concentrate in class and also result to absenteeism due to stigma as well as contributing to deformed children.

To avoid stigmatization, he emphasized on prevention at household level by ensuring jiggers are treated and also advised victims to maintain hygiene, smear houses and spray them with chemicals to eradicate jiggers.

Cases which are identified by health promoters are asked to continue with free medical camp in villages in order to destroy the virus.

Lurambi Sub-county Public Health Officer Antony Ngaira said the Government is needed to raise budget allocation from KSh4 million to KSh6 million to eradicate jiggers.

During the exercise, Ngaira lauded partners including Vestergaard that issued medicine and shoes to those affected with jigger flea.

It was revealed that children infested with jiggers are neglected by their parents and taken care by grand mothers who do not smear houses.
