Chaos mark KCSE in Kiambu as candidates discover they are not registered

Jane Wambui and Elvis Amunabi perusing documents they had paid for to KNEC to sit this years KCSE examinations. Their dream has faded as they have been rejected by the examination body.

A number of students have been turned away after it was realized that Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) did not register them for this year’s KCSE.

The new measures to curb exam cheating has also seen others being registered to sit exams for subjects that they did not choose.

Students who had enrolled in the adult education learning in Kiambu County were shocked to find out that they had not been put in the nominal roll despite paying for it in March this year.

According to Elvis Amunabi Andai, a student who was learning at Geodav Institute of Technology for Adult Education, he discovered he was not registered when he attempted to attend rehearsals last week. He reported the matter to the institute and Kiambu Sub-county education office.

“I learnt that my name was not on the nominal list during rehearsal day and alerted the Kiambu Sub-county education office who told me that they will sort out the matter by the time of exam day,” Amunabi said.

But that was not to be. He was not allowed into the exam room yesterday because his name was missing from the list of candidates.

Francis Mwangi is equally wondering how his grades will be as he could not sit Chemistry exams on Monday after KNEC registered him for Physics.

“My shock is that I have been learning Chemistry and was prepared but I found out that I was registered rather for Physics and when I inquired I was told that I can only do Physics,” Mwangi said.

He said that he is now forced to revise for Physics despite him not having any knowledge of it.

“My teacher has agreed to take me through Physics in the next two weeks when the paper is due. I will try to do my best and answer the questions to the best of my knowledge. Hopefully the grade I will get will not affect my main grade,” he said.

Jane Wambui, another candidate, has also not been registered despite going through the full process in March.

“I am hurt by this outcome; even after verifying registration I am shocked to find out that I am not in the nominal list,” she said, complaining that no explanation has been given.

A management who refused to be named said they had made sure that all their students were well registered and everything was in order.

“We are only mandated by the ministry of education to offer learning to students and registration is done by the students who directly paid to KNEC and we presented the names of our students to the sub-county ministry of education,” one said.

Wambui displays the documents that she said were given to clear her to sit her KCSE. She was denied the opportunity despite all these.

An effort to reach out to the County Director of Education was fruitless since the secretary said that the CDE was out of office and was attending meetings.

The Kiambu Sub-county Deputy County Commissioner Titus Macharia said the matter is out of his hands since it involves KNEC.
