The first day of Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) Annual Delegates Conference (ADC) in Mombasa today was marred with chaos and misunderstanding over voting modalities of the union’s new Constitution.

It all started when delegates demanded for a list of registered members, with absence of returning officers to conduct and officiate the elections complicating the matter.

Tension was high following the standoff between the union leaders and delegates, whereby police officers  were called in to calm the situation  after some delegates started chanting  ‘no voting , no elections’ with some temporarily blocking the highway for the Union Secretary General who was on his way to que so that he can vote for the new constitution.

Delegates were required either to say whether they support or oppose the new draft constitution, which was the main activity during the first day of the ADC that started December 10, 2024 and ends December 11, 2024.

UASU Chairperson Ms. Grace Nyongesa later addressed the delegates urging them to calm down as they strive to solve some of the issues raised by the delegates in order allow voting process to continue.
