Chaos as goons invade school in a Kisii/Nyamira border row

Elders consult as the border dispute between Kisii and Nyamira escalated into violence. MCAs of two neighbouring Wards have laid claim to Tinga town, vowing to stay put until it is declared theirs.

Businesses and schools around Tinga in Nyamira came to a standstill on Tuesday when goons invaded the town and demanded it to be declared the property of Kisii County.

At one point the goons, allegedly financed by one MCA from Kisii County, took the nearby Marani Girls Secondary hostage and forced them to scream as they invaded the market and stopped Nyamira revenue officers from collecting taxes.

They proceeded to Tinga dispensary and threatened to eject its health workers and replace them with those from Kisii County.

Brandishing swords as they sang war songs, the well-organized gang warned that they will return Tinga market to Kisii County, the rightful owner.

When the tumult settled, Monyerero Ward MCA Peter Otachi told the press that the Nyamira government was occupying Tinga Market and dispensary illegally.

“We have evidence indicating that both Tinga Market and dispensary belong to Kisii but not Nyamira. That is what we want,” he said, promising to repossess the two facilities and use his Ward funds to construct hood toilets and bathrooms at the market.

“I want to assure you that I will bring a lot of development to this town if you bring it back to Monyerero Ward in Kisii County where it belongs,” he said.

It took Nyamira and Manga police more than two hours to scatter the irate gang and restore calm.

Bosamaro Ward MCA Charles Keganda maintained that the two facilities belong to Nyamira County and he will not allow even an inch to be ceded to Kisii County.
