A Form 4 candidate at Dr. Charles Muli Inyanzaani Secondary School in Yatta, Machakos county, tragically drowned in Thika River on Thursday while swimming with friends.
The student, who was set to sit for his national exams soon, had ventured into the river despite warnings about the dangers posed by unpredictable water conditions.
Ndalani Chief Cosmas Kaloki confirmed the heartbreaking incident after receiving reports from a local resident.
Upon arrival at the scene, Kaloki found the boy’s lifeless body floating in the river, a scene that shocked the community. Local police from Yatta, along with brave community volunteers, worked together to retrieve the body.
The school’s Head teacher later identified the boy, expressing sorrow over the loss of one of their own.
“The boy was swimming with his friends when the tragedy occurred. Instead of seeking help, the others fled, leaving him behind,” Chief Kaloki explained.
The boy’s body has since been removed to Mbaku Funeral Home awaiting postmortem.
Chief Kaloki issued a stern warning to children against swimming in rivers, even when water levels seem low, underscoring the hidden dangers that can quickly turn fun into tragedy.
He also called on schools to remain vigilant about their students’ whereabouts, particularly during school hours, to prevent such unfortunate incidents.
