Speaking during a mentorship program held at Lugulu Girls’ High School, Bungoma County Chief Officer in charge of Education, Nalwa Wanjala, warned that those who fail to meet academic expectations risk being dropped.

Reports of poor academic performance among beneficiaries of Bungoma County Government scholarship program have sparked debate about its effectiveness and the need for stricter accountability measures.

“This program is intended to uplift hardworking and dedicated learners. Sadly, some students are not living up to this vision. We must ensure that these opportunities go to those who truly value and make the most of them,” said Wanjala.

He acknowledged that delayed disbursement of scholarship funds has significantly impacted students’ academic progress, with some struggling to meet basic educational needs.

He further urged parents to step in and support their children to bridge the gaps caused by these delays.

“While the county government has done its part to cover tuition fees, the challenges posed by late payments cannot be ignored. Parents must also take responsibility for ensuring their children have the necessary tools to succeed academically,” he added.

Parents drawn from Webuye East and West Sub-Counties advocated for introducing performance benchmarks for scholarship beneficiaries, arguing that such measures would encourage greater commitment to studies.

Additionally, some cited insufficient learning resources as a significant obstacle to academic success.

The Bungoma County Government Scholarship Program has been a lifeline for countless underprivileged families.
