At least 106 trainers from coastal county Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions participated in a two-week capacity-building program on Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) at the Ahmed Shahame Mwidani Technical Training Institute in Mombasa.
This initiative, organized by the Kenya School of Technical Vocational and Educational Training (KSTVET), aimed to equip educators with modern skills and industry-aligned approaches to create job-ready students.
Since October 2024, approximately 1,511 trainers have been trained in CBET, part of the government’s strategy to align TVET curricula with market demands and address regional skills gaps.
Ruth Kinyanjui, CBET Master Trainer Lead, said that participants will learn various methodologies, learner engagement techniques, and assessments to enhance their teaching.

“The training is designed to align education with industry needs, focusing on equipping trainers with the tools and skills necessary to deliver CBET learning effectively,” she said.

David Nyambuti from the State Department of TVET noted that this programme, now in its fourth cohort, aims to prepare educators to deliver high-quality competency-based education.
“This training is equipping educators with the expertise they need to grow professionally while meeting the demands of competency-based teaching,” he said.
He highlighted the importance of collaboration with industries, as the dual training approach connects classroom learning with practical experience.

Margaret Wangari Mwangi, a senior trainee at Taita-Taveta National Polytechnic, praised the programme for integrating theoretical and practical training, essential for today’s job market.
Teacher Sammy Matanda from the training institute added that CBET will bolster the capacity of trainers and improve student skill transfer, enhancing overall livelihoods.
