Nyaribari Masaba MP has vowed to continue supporting education and cultural activities in the area, saying they are interdependent in addition to being important tools of development.

MP Clive Ombane was speaking to education stakeholders and cultural experts at a Nyamira hotel during a consultative meeting to discuss on ways the two disciplines can be blended in area schools.

He said that the constituency NG-CDF committee had put aside money for talent development in sports because they realized there are some students who do better in field activities than in class and they should not be denied an opportunity to excel in their areas of choice.

Ombane lauded cultural experts from the region led by Nyambane Obino, Johnson Nyandika and Ondieki Moiruruki for their efforts in pushing for the introduction of cultural activities into the country’s education curriculum.

He thus called on the Ministry of Education to introduce cultural studies as an independent subject in schools.

“Culture should be regarded as a distinctive spiritual and intellectual discipline on which the holistic development of education is anchored,” he said. “Let our children understand the power of their culture rather than being spectators,” he said.

Ombane promised to start a cultural centre in the constituency where the youth will be taught about cultural values.

Further, he challenged elders and local writers to establish a library for vernacular books and document cultural artifacts, including traditional prayers, chants and songs.

Nyambane Obino said that together with his team, plans were at advanced stages in popularizing African culture and practices in schools.

He disclosed that schools including Cardinal Otunga Mosocho High School, Kisii School and Elimiu Academy had shown keen interest to partner with their edu-cultural programmes.

Johnson Nyandika said that they are also encouraging education and cultural growth in the area through media platforms such as Kisii TV and expressed optimism regarding the venture.
