A bishop has asked adults across the country to be extra vigilant to identify and report cases of abuse of orphans and vulnerable children.
Bishop Meshack Mukwilu of Africa Brotherhood Church said although there has been remarkable progress in coordinating efforts to curb child abuse and violence against children in the country, teachers and parents still have much to do to curb the menace in the country.
Dr Mukwilu said families and schools remain the apex of early detection of cases of child abuse.
“It is through these two institutions where problems facing orphans and vulnerable children can be detected and reported where necessary to authorities for action,” the bishop said.
Dr Mukwilu said extra vigilance against various forms of child abuse by responsible members of the society was critical to addressing the problem.
“We are also saying no to out of court settlements mooted by some parents whose children get defiled. All cases of defilement must be dealt with in courts,” he said at Wote church while addressing a youth forum yesterday.

The bishop lauded the judiciary for giving priority to cases relating to child abuse.
“We have witnessed speedy hearings of cases and convictions of various persons found guilty of various offences. We want this spirit to be sustained so that those who prey on innocent children can be placed where they belong,” the bishop added.
Dr Mukwilu also advised parents to monitor their children not to be involved in drug abuse and other vices that may ruin their lives during this November -December long holiday.
Dr Mukwilu said some students join bad company during the holidays and end up learning bad behaviour which interferes with their academics.
He asked parents to be vigilant especially on the boys who make friends with people who are not students.
“I ask parents to monitor their children and know about their children’s whereabout and what they are up to,” he advised.
