Kenyans have been urged to be consistent with reading books and engaging in lifelong learning, which will broaden their mindsets and enable them to be more knowledgeable.

Experts raised concerns that the country’s reading culture is slowly dying and that there’s a dire need to revive it so that Kenyans can benefit from more knowledge and insightful opinions that can help shape their lives, businesses, imagination, and creativity.

Authors led by Njeru Githae, Ciku Kimani, and Peter Muigai said that time is ripe for Kenyans to shift from the culture of reading to passing exams, but they aim to read to add comprehension and shape one’s perspective.

Speaking during the launch of a book exhibition fair in Thika, the authors reiterated that reading is imperative, especially for the country’s youth and startups, as it provides insightful information on rich cultural history, life challenges, and ways to handle them.

“The Kenyan literature is extensive, and there are many authors and also budding writers with very insightful content which can shape the mindset of our learners, the business community, and even our leaders. It’s high time Kenyans embrace our literature and revitalize the reading culture,” Githae said.

The authors revealed that many have embraced E-books, a key way to reach a large audience and earn income, to ensure they make a fortune and a better living.

“Technology is rapidly changing, and we must adapt to the trends as authors. We have embraced e-platforms to disseminate our content and readers can access our books on digital platforms,” Muigai said.

Zachary Kabera, who unveiled his book Unshaken, said that e-books are the way to go and advised authors to ensure that their work is on e-platforms for a wide audience.

“The government should also support us by ensuring our content is used in the curriculum. We are registering an organization for local authors to enable us to grow our work and support budding authors,” he said.
