Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has revoked Prof Amukoa Anangwe’s appointment as chairperson of the University of Nairobi Council, effective February 21, 2025.
This follows a seven-day strike notice issued by the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) demanding Anangwe’s removal over allegations of mismanagement and looting.
UASU, led by Dr Richard Bosire, accused Anangwe of sabotaging university operations and claimed that powerful officials are attempting to seize valuable university land, which has cost the institution billions. They also allege that the council is obstructing the acting vice-chancellor from fulfilling her duties and have called for an investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.

UASU has threatened to strike if Anangwe is not removed and is also calling for the abolition of the chief operations officer position and the cancellation of job advertisements for leadership roles, which they argue are flawed.
The union criticized Anangwe’s governance, saying it has led to a crisis that jeopardizes the university’s future and called for urgent action from the Education Committee in national Assembly.
Additionally, UASU critizised two-year transformation strategy introduced by the university’s chancellor, sayibng that it was created without stakeholder involvement and could facilitate the sale of university assets.
The union also demands the abolition of the chief operations officer position, currently held by Brian Ouma, and seeks the withdrawal of a new strategy proposed by the university’s chancellor, Pro

UASU added that powerful government officials are plotting to seize university land located opposite the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) and near Hotel Boulevard on James Gichuru Road.
