Kenya Primary Schools Sports Association, Narok branch is up in arms over the government’s underfunding of sports.

Association’s Chairperson David Koech says the situation has affected sports preparations and led to the withdrawal of some schools from sports at early stages.

Speaking at his Kaptembwa Comprehensive School in Trans Mara today, he said that despite raising the matter, no action has been taken.

“Underfunding is a major problem at the moment. This problem has affected preparations and led to the withdrawal of some schools from sports,” he noted.

According to him, the area has many highly talented learners, eight of whom went on to compete in the regional games in Uganda last year.

He expressed fear that inter-school athletics, which are set to kick off mid-this month, could be derailed since many schools have not acquired uniforms and other items.

“We have many talented learners here in Narok. Last year, eight of our learners made it to regional games in Uganda. We hope to take at least 20 learners to Uganda this year because we still have the eight learners,” he pointed out.

Koech urged the government to increase capitation funds, observing that teachers are often forced to demand sports contributions from parents and guardians, which he says is unacceptable.

“We want the government to increase the amount of capitation and construct and upgrade stadia in the country. This will enable learners to use their talents. We also take this opportunity to wish our learners well in all levels of these games,” added Koech.

The Association appealed for the construction and upgrading of stadia in the region to boost training, further expressing hope that learners from the area will excel in sports.
