A total of 20,000 candidates drawn from 176 public and private secondary schools in 8 sub-counties of Busia are doing this year’s KCSE, a report from the County Education office has revealed.
A report seen by Education News on October 25, 2024 showed that of the total candidature, 19,674 candidates are drawn from 167 public secondary schools, which comprise of 9,608 boys while girls are 10,006.
The remaining 326 candidates are from 9 private secondary schools which comprise of 173 boys while girls are 153.
Out of eight sub counties, Samia sub-county has registered the highest number of candidates totaling 3,440 comprising of 1,913 boys and 1,527 girls followed closely by Teso North that has registered a total of 3,157 candidates who include1,577 boys and 1,580 girls.
Overall, the total candidature in the county, majority are girls at 10,219 while boys are at 9,781, unlike before where girls were few compared to boys due to cases of early pregnancies which made some of them to drop out of school.
The Ministry of Education and the Teachers Service Commission will engage a total of 167 supervisors who will supervise this year’s KCSE exams in all the 167 public centers across the county.

As for my Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) exams, the report further showed that a total of 29,910 candidates made up of 14,992 boys and 14,918 girls drawn from various public primary and Junior secondary schools (JSS) will sit for their respective exams in 428 exams centres, with a total of 1,824 candidates from private schools comprising 976 boys and 848 girls gearing to sit for the same.
The report further states that the construction of grade nine classrooms is ongoing in the eight sub counties.
A total of 112 classrooms have been allocated to the Sub Counties with Teso North having the highest number of classrooms of 24 followed by Butula with 22 classrooms, Busia with 21 classrooms, Nambale 13 classrooms, Bunyala 10 classrooms, Samia 8 classrooms with Teso South and Central having 7 classrooms each.
