Abolish new funding model, develop alternative, students tell Govt

learning

University students want the new University Funding Model reviewed in its entirety or scrapped off completely.

The students, majorly from Kisii University, said the model contains a lot of glaring shortfalls and cumbersome bureaucracies that expose it to corruption and unfairness to applicants.

“This system will only benefit the rich in the guise of helping students from poor homes,” said Wilfred Mokora.

Mokora suggested that the model be disbanded and the funds directed to constituencies under a new body other than NG-CDF.

“Deputy County Commissioners should be delegated this duty because they are near people and will use Chiefs to identify beneficiaries directly,” said Janet Bosibori.

The students were speaking at Hotel Karmel Park, Kisii during the UDA Kisii Comrade Chapter meeting on Saturday.

Mombasa county Senator and UDA Secretary General, Hassan Omar, who graced the occasion, defended the model saying it aims at education equity among students from all walks of life.

Principal Secretary (PS) for Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Development, Suzan Mang’eni, asked the youth to start small businesses and reduce dependence on government loans and bursaries.
