The time that children are expected to be in school in some parts of Budalang’i, Busia County has alarmed parents as 5AM is much too early for them.
The parents are concerned about the safety of their children, questioning why the school heads force the remedial lessons on them.
The angry parents raised the matter during a public baraza attended by Bunyala Deputy County Commissioner Dr Paul Papa in Ruambwa yesterday.
Responding to the matter, Bunyala Sub-county Director of Education George Owuoche confessed that it is a worrying trend and should be addressed as a matter of urgency.
He explained that the Ministry of Education (MoE) guidelines are clear that learning begins at 8AM and ends at 4PM.
He said although teachers mean well, there must be better ways of helping weak learners to catch up.
He lauded the Budalang’i NGCDF committee for allocating funds to facilitate the construction of new schools in the constituency, noting that this has brought education closer to the people.
“I would want to advise parents to enroll their children in the new schools in large numbers so they can gain from the investment,” he said.
He, however, expressed concern over the dismal performance in national exams, saying Bunyala Sub-county that was position one in 2022 KCSE in Busia County was 4th among 8 sub-counties.
