More than 200 teachers in Kisii County have been trained to use virtual labs to foster teaching in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

The County Trainer Representative in charge of the Centre of Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA) said 256 teachers were trained to teach online using simulation.

He noted that teachers will teach practicals through the Internet, describing it as cheap, efficient, and effective.

“You do not need to have a laboratory to teach practicals. It cuts costs and enhances learning,” Nyangoya said during a four-day training at Kisii school on Friday.

He noted that teachers, including those of Junior Secondary Schools (JSS), have been taught integrated science and doing experiments online.

Nyangoya noted that the training is being done at Kisii School’s five centres: Kisii Central Sub-county, Kisii South, Kitutu Central, Marani, and Masaba South.

He pointed out that similar training is being done at the Sameta Centre, which comprises the sub-counties of Etago, Gucha, Nyamache, Gucha South, Kenyenya, and Sameta.

“Some teachers were trained in 2023 but never covered all the parts. That is why we want them fully trained,” Nyangoya noted.

The official noted that the government has a challenging training program for newly employed JSS teachers, so periodic training is organised to equip them with the knowledge.

He asserted that SMASSE and STEM were merged to make CEMASTEA broad and accommodate the new JSS curriculum.
