The Kiambu County Government will employ an additional 250 ECDE teachers in 2025 to ensure optimal learning, governor Kimani Wamatangi has said.
Speaking during the launch of a three-day capacity building event at the headquarters in Kiambu town, Wamatangi said that the addition will help improve teacher to learner ratio, bringing it down to 1:34 to allow for more individualized attention and effective learning.
“1:34 is still high; we have a long way to go but it’s a step in the right direction,” he said.

He said that the teachers who are undertaking diploma courses will be fully sponsored by the county government. The programmes are designed to equip the teachers with practical skills to help a generation which is growing up in a fast growing digital world.
The governor said that the county government has started a journey of building ECDEs in the public primary schools, even as plans are underway to enroll children into a feeding programme that includes nutritious porridge, milk and an egg.
Nancy Gichungwa, the CECM for education, said it was the first time that ECDE teachers are having capacity building so as they can be enlightened.
She said that parents are now looking forward to their children going to school since they know that they are in a safe place, they will be educated and will be fed.
“The teachers are the ones who bring out the foundation of children and deserve to be appreciated and we request the teachers to treat the children as humans because you are their second parents,” she said.
