Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) officials on Monday afternoon arrested 13 teachers including a Principal, Supervisors and Invigilators in connection with KCSE exam malpractice at Nyamninia Secondary School in Gem, Yala sub-county.
According to police reports, the KNEC officials from headquarters in Nairobi while conducting their monitoring exercise at 10:15 am at the school when they came across some photocopied responses for the questions of the ongoing mathematics paper.
The officials recovered four photocopies from one supervisor and other copies from the candidates as some of them struggled to chew them and hide them in their private parts.
KNEC suspect the candidates may have contracted professionals to aid in the malpractice exercise.
A multi-agency team consisting of the sub-county security team led by the DCC, sub county/ county directors of education and the KNEC officials visited the school where the incident was established.
Those arrested are nine invigilators, the Nyamninia Secondary School principal and her deputy, exam supervisor and a Board of Management (BOM) teacher from St. Mary’s School Yala. One invigilator managed to escape from the exam centre.

KNEC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr David Njengere confirmed the incident indicating that the case is now in the hands of DCI to complete investigations and have the culprits charged in court.
Dr Njegere who spoke to Education News said the culprits will be charged in court.
“KNEC monitoring officers are the ones who busted the school, the message is clear: Those who attempt to or engage in malpractices will be found and sanctions in the KNEC Act and the Rules and Regulations will be applied,” the CEO said.
Gem sub county police commander Charles Wafula confirmed suspects are currently held at Yala Police Station and are expected to be arraigned in court today for alleged exam malpractice.
